Satellite Internet Hardware Terms



Antenna (Reflector)

A parabolic-shaped dish for transmitting and receiving radio waves.



The angle of rotation (horizontal) that a ground based parabolic antenna must be rotated through to point to a specific satellite in a geosynchronous orbit. The azimuth angle for any particular satellite can be determined for any point on the surface of the earth giver the latitude and longitude of that point. It is defined with respect to due north as a matter of easy convenience.



A measure of spectrum (frequency) use or capacity. For instance, an analog dialup modem provides only 53Kbps of bandwidth compared to a satellite modem that provides 1500Kbps of bandwidth.



Slang for a communications satellite located in geosynchronous orbit.

BUC - Block Up Converter

A block upconverter (BUC) is used in the transmission (uplink) of satellite signals. It converts a band (or "block") of frequencies from a lower frequency to a higher frequency. Modern BUCs convert from the L band to Ku band, C band and Ka band.


Coax (Coaxial Cable)

A transmission line in which an inner conductor is surrounded by an outer conductor or shield and separated by a nonconductive dielectric. The VSAT SEND cable and the VSAT RECEIVE cable are Coax cables.



To initiate service on a modem, to make active on a satellite network.


Coverage Area

The entire area that is within the beam of a satellite.



Contiguous United States. In short, all the states in the U.S. except Hawaii and Alaska.



The upward tilt to a satellite antenna measured in degrees required to aim the antenna at the communications satellite. When. aimed at the horizon, the elevation angle is zero. If it were tilted to a point directly overhead, the satellite antenna would have an elevation of 90 degrees.


Feed Arm

The part of a satellite system that sticks out from the front of the antenna where the Feedhorn, LNB, and BUC are typically mounted.


Feed Horn

A satellite TV receiving antenna component that collects the signal reflected from the main surface reflector and channels this signal into the low-noise blocker (LNB).


Ka band

The frequency range from 18 to 31 GHz.


Ku Band

The frequency range from 12 to 18 GHz.


Kbps (KiloBits Per Second)

One thousand bits per second.


KBps (KiloBytes Per Second)

One thousand Bytes per second


LNB (Low Noise Blocker)

A low-noise block converter (LNB, for low-noise block, or sometimes LNC, for low-noise converter) is the (receiving, or downlink) antenna of what is commonly called the parabolic (actually paraboloid) satellite dish commonly used for satellite communications.


Look Angle

Same as Elevation.


Non-Penetrating Roof Mount

A large metal tray with a pedestal which is ballasted with concrete blocks to create a stable, wind-resistant satellite antenna pole mount on a flat roof without making any holes in the roof


Pole Mount

A Schedule 40 steel pipe in the correct diameter set in concrete for the installation of a satellite system.


Satellite Modem

A communications device that modulates and demodulates signals at the remote satellite site. Provides a standard Ethernet connection for the user.


Standard Installation

The labor and materials that comprise a satellite installation esxclusive of any custom work such as trenching, long cable runs, excessive interior wall penetrations, etc.


Tri-Mast Mount

A satellite mount that uses three seperate attachment points to a wall or roof.



Very small aperture terminal. Refers to small earth stations, usually in the 1.2 to 2.4 meter range.
